Business Success: Amir Salehi & Tradesmen Brighton

In our previous edition of Business Success, we spoke with Hannah Sage from Milo, who told us about her current business which actually started out as a university project. This month, we spoke to Amir Salehi, founder of Tradesmen Brighton. He spoke to us about how Tradesmen Brighton first started, what makes them stand out from the competition, and what his plans for the future are.

What’s the story of Tradesmen Brighton, in a nutshell?

Tradesmen Brighton is a modern plumbing business, built from my 20+ years’ experience in the industry. This business developed off the back of previous property maintenance businesses that I ran operating on the south coast of the UK. Tradesmen Brighton had to be different. It has been built with customer satisfaction as the key and for a client-base that are happy to pay a little more for a service that stands up to the 5-star rating. As well as being a plumber, I am a property developer. I own quite a lot of property in Brighton & Hove and so I understand the bigger picture of property maintenance as a whole.

How do you stand out from the competition?

We are not your standard plumbing company and we’re working hard to separate ourselves from the mass of plumbers operating in Sussex. We align ourselves with some reputable estate/letting agencies in Brighton & Hove. This has been really important as the work we do on behalf of the landlords is essential business for us. We build relationships with our agents and the landlords, so they trust in our work and know we can keep their tenants happy. We are also beginning to explore SEO with a local consultant, as we believe search engines can provide a flow of business all year round. Our search campaign will allow us to further grow our client base and position ourselves as the premium plumbing and property maintenance company in East Sussex.

Describe your workspace. Are you tidy, or do you work in organised chaos?

My workplace is my van mostly, so it is not your conventional office. I do take leads from home and have a home office, but I am mostly on the road or in one of the many Brighton homes I work on. Keeping tidy as a plumber is important- despite how a home looks whilst the work is taking place. We most importantly need to know how our customers home looked before we did the work so that they come home and are impressed.

Tea or coffee?

Coffee, always.

How do you keep a strong work/life balance?

I work really hard in working hours and, where possible, shut off from business when I am with my family. I also trust in my team and know that when I have family time, it means that I shouldn’t be on my phone.

Which workplace habit can you not stand?

Work that shows no integrity. I see a lot of poor work carried out from previous plumbers that showed a lack of integrity or craft, and this really bothers me.

Who is your business idol, and why?

An obvious choice- but it’s Richard Branson. Everything he does in some way leads to people having fun or experiencing something positive. He is level-headed and not afraid to fail. His own personal lust for life is what sets him apart from many businessmen that simply just want to be the richest person in their country.

What is your management style?

I incentivise and make sure that my team know that hard work equals better, higher paying jobs for us. In my position, running this business is not about how much profit I can personally have at the end of the year.

What advice would you give to people starting their own business?

Be prepared for hard work! Understand where the good business comes from and nurture those relationships or platforms that deliver you the right business.

What’s your secret to success in one sentence?

My success comes from calculated risks, hard work and treating people well so that I have a support network that can give me the edge.

What will the future bring for Tradesmen Brighton?

Tradesmen Brighton will further serve the high-end market of Sussex and potentially expand within the next year.
